Critics Voice Concern over Energy Drinks

Drug Store News, a leading industry trade publication, is reporting about a survey on energy drinks and their current cachet with consumers. ACNielsen's recent report on the drinks, "What's Hot Around the Globe," says that the market for them is booming. Energy drinks grew at a 10 percent rate in the 59 markets examined, including the United States and Canada.
Vendors are introducing plenty of new products. Coca-Cola launched Full Throttle which, "has all the characteristics--metal can, macho name and heavy metal graphics--or the newer energy drinks aimed at young men 20 to 30," according to the publication.

Hansen, maker of Monster energy drinks, reports that Lo-Carb Monster, Joker and Monster Energy Assault are its best sellers. Sugar-free drinks are becoming more popular with consumers who like a drink that can give them a bit more than a traditional cola.

Robert Parada, director of marketing for Hip Hop Beverages-which recently repositioned its energy drink line to better target young Hispanic males, a prime market--said the company's sugar-free Pit Bull beverage is a big hit.
